Good story

By Caitlin McColl (Canada)

Enjoyed this story. It was quite abrupt, I felt. And the lack of quotes around the dialogue was strange, but it still worked. Very descriptive and powerful for such a short story

short and depressing

By Sarah Baethge (USA)

Ok, I generally like dark pieces, but this didn't give me much to latch onto. All I saw was two miserable people, with no deeper meaning or realization of anything. If this was meant to lead into anything, I'm not sure I care enough about either one of them to read on.Could you not give any more detail on what the characters feel or want? Yes, it was a snapshot of a life-changing and terrible event; so what are they going to do about it? What happens next?

that which consumes

By Heide Hoffmann (New Zealand)

I realised that I am not a short story person. I do understand the storyline but at the end of my reading, I was somehow disappointed. I felt that the good part still has to come. WIll they learn anything out of that? How will their life look now?

Good potential

By Khyiah Angel (Australia)

That which consumes by JR Phillips is a short story about a single incident in the lives of a couple. The quality of the writing is good and the story has the potential to be an engaging read, but the narrator is too distant from the reading audience which makes it difficult to embrace the characters. The lack of speech marks in dialogue makes it difficult to determine when the story moves from direct speech to narration. As a reader I’d like to know more about each of the characters and their relationship in the lead up to the climax. I want the story to matter.
